NBFF 2024 Official Selection

Reviewing over 100 submissions from 36 different countries, the NBFF jury panel curated the NBFF Official Selection by selecting films dance films that explore an innovative approach to “challenging the possibilities of what dance can look like in video form”. The official kNOwBOX dance Film Festival 2024 selection features 8 dance films by both national and international filmmakers. NBFF 2024: REFLECTIONS is a poetic exploration of human emotion, self-discovery, and cinematic nostalgia.

HÖME / World Premier / USA / 8:19

"Home" unfolds, weaving a narrative around the concept of "A Room of One's Own” at Arts at Blue Roof Studios. Through the mesmerizing lens of clown dance, Blossom Wilder takes the audience on a profound journey within an enclosed world. The film intricately explores Blossom's self-discovery and emotional odyssey, guided by the transformative power of Alexandria Douziech's installation, "for protection, with love.”

If I Were You / Korea Premier / USA / 8:43

In "If I Were You" a couple shares an oscillating dance of intention and disruption--their movements a continuous exchange of support and potential peril, pushing them toward self-discovery. Falling into known patterns, but desperate to shift, they beckon and reject each other, careening toward togetherness. This is a slow, exhausting, mesmerizing dance, steeped in the unknown, where souls wait patiently to be held, released, and resolved.

In Plain Sight / Korea Premier / France / 10:31

In plain sight is the result of months of exploring urban movements on a boulevard in Tehran, Iran. In a society where many questions and restrictions exist around the concept of ‘movement’, three performers try to define their limits of dance. They interact with their surroundings and thus become an integral part of the flow of the city. They accompany each other to find the power of collective movement. The journey is the destination.

When a woman enters a place of worship, all her ancestors appear and won't let her leave until she dances and participates in rituals and is whole.

MORNING INTERLUDE / France / 6:00

At daybreak on a country road a young couple returns from a restless night, exhausted. Angry with each other, the couple will in a magnetic and memorable ballet try to reconcile.

Skipping Stones / World Premier / France, Tunisia, Canada / 57:00

Born from the meeting of French choreographer Yvann Alexandre and French film director Doria Belanger, Skip stones is a sensory journey in the heart of the dance movement. Nourished by thirty years of creation and the meetings that carried them, mixing repertoire excerpts and danced conversations, the film paints the portrait of a creator (Yvann Alexandre) as well as its artistic community, and the energy that emanates from it. From the banks of the Loire river to the roofs of Tunis, passing through the snow forests of Quebec, it is all about inventing its own space and time, both organic and humanist.
